Connection to the campus wide wireless LAN system 802.1x
The Academic Computing and Communications Centre
is trialing the use of a campus wide wireless LAN system 802.1x.
This connection method is not intended to replace the existing
web authentication method but to complement it and there are
plans to continue to operate both systems concurrently in the
future.
Trial period
Notes on Use
- Read the general information on Access
Point Connections before attempting to use the system.
- During the trial period there is no support or help desk
available.
- Any comments or advice on how to improve the system are
welcome.
- There is a possibility that the wireless LAN trial may be
suspended or cancelled without prior notice.
- During the trial period the connection method for the
wireless LAN system may be changed or modified at any time.
Please check the news and updates from the Academic Computing
and Communications Centre regularly.
- Note that the Access Guide
and Users Guideare similar.
- No users agreement window appears upon connection to 802.1x
however your access of this page and the 'notes on using the
system' contained on this page are deemed to provide your
consent to abide by the users agreement.
Current issues
- You may be asked to input a password twice when a connection
is being established to the LAN network or if there is a
problem or mistake with the configuration process.
- The issue of unverified server certificates issued by NII
when connecting via iPad or similar devices is under
investigation.
Using the System
Requirements
- A Wi-Fi enabled computer compatible with a wireless LAN
interface compliant with IEEE802.11a/b/g is necessary.
Settings
- Please use the setting 'Obtain an IP address automatically'.
Connection Procedure
- When checking for available 'Wireless Network Connections'
please select "utwlan-x".
- Please select "WPA2 Enterprise" as the authentication method
and enter your user ID (UTID-13) and password.
In particular, please use the following preferences in
relation with wireless LAN security.

- During the initial connection you may be asked to verify the
server certificate.
- When challenged and prompted for a password again please
enter your Unified Authentication Password.
- After successful authentication you will connected to the
campus network system.
Important points
As the campus network system uses a certificate issued by NII,
devices such as Androids may be required to install a CA
certificate.

Manuals
There is no manual for the 802.1x wireless LAN system as it is
dependent on the OS version in use. Please connect to the
following makers for reference material.
