Q2. What do I do to install the software?

Log in using the PC administrator account and download an installation file from the URL shown below.

Q3. I want the installation media for SPSS.

The SPSS installation media (DVD-R) can be distributed by the colleges, schools, research institutes, centers, and academic service offices. Within these organizations, the installation media can be freely duplicated. Also, the duplicated media can be distributed to the students. However, it cannot be distributed to non-university individuals.

Once the administrator of media is determined (it must be either the teacher or administrative staff) at each institution, apply for the media by e-mail. There is no pre-fixed format for the application. In the mail, clearly write the name of the organization, also the name, affiliation and contact information of the media administrator. We will send the media by internal mail to your organization.

Q4. Can I install and use SPSS on my own computer terminal?

Yes. The contract made between the university and SPSS permits members of Tsukuba University to use the software on their privately owned computer terminals. However (personally owned as well as the university owned terminals alike), use is limited to education, research and school administrative work. Also, non-university members (such as family of the university members) are not permitted to use the software.

Also note, the SPSS software only works when the computer is connected with the university network.

Q5. I would like to know the IP address of the license server.

Type the following host name, not the IP address.
spss.u.tsukuba.ac.jp

The license server can only be connected within the University of Tsukuba network. If you need to use the software at outside the campus, please use VPN connection service to get connected with the campus network.

Q11. Some of the options are not included in the menu.

When you install SPSS, all the options will be installed onto the PC, but a license must be purchased in order to use each one of the options. Options included in Tsukuba University’s contract are Regression(6 concurrent users can use respectively), Exact Tests（4 concurrent users can use respectively）, Categories（2 concurrent users can use respectively）, Missing Values（2 concurrent users can use respectively）, Decision Trees（2 concurrent users can use respectively）, Advanced（unlimited）. Therefore, all other options cannot be used.

The available versions of the options, except for Advanced, are matched to the Zengaku computer system. The Zengaku computer system is scheduled to be upgraded to the latest version every March. When using options, please make sure that the version is the same as the version of the Zengaku computer system.

*The options(except Advanced) is not available while a license is checked out using a commuter license.

Q13. How do I use SPSS from an off-campus location?

You can get connected with the license server from an off-campus network (such as your internet provider) by using the VPN Service provided by the Academic Computing and Communications Center.

You can also use Remote Desktop of the Zengaku Computer System.

Q14. What do I do if I have no connection with the internet?

To be able to use SPSS with no internet connection such as from a location away from home, there is a short-term license loaning scheme called “Commuter License.”

To Checkout a Commuter License, in advance you need to connect the license server and select [IBM SPSS Statistics] > [IBM SPSS Statistics 2x Commuter License] from Start Menu. During the term of the loan (up to 30 days), you can start up SPSS without a license server connection. For more details, refer to SPSS Site License installation instruction.

Q15. About checking out a Commuter License

When you start up the Commuter License, the computer screen shows the version that the university is currently providing. Set up the version that you have installed onto your computer.

Q16. When I check out the Commuter License, the dialog box says “XX (number) is invalid. Please enter a number between 1 and 7”.

The default Duration (period of loaning) is set under 7 days on installation. It can be set for an extension of up to 30 days by changing the setting on the side of the client PC. For details of changing the setting, please refer to SPSS Site License installation instruction.

Q19. What “University of Tsukuba” institutions are included as part of the Site Licensee agreement?

All the institutes and organizations that are part of the University of Tsukuba such as University Hospital, Elementary School, Junior High School, Senior High School and all other university affiliated institutions are subject to the license agreement.

• Example 1: JSPS postdoctoral fellows accepted by our faculty members
A1. They can use.

• Example 2: A person who officially accepts as a visiting researcher
A2. Those who have proof of acceptance to our university (ID card, permission, etc) are included in the scope of license.

• Example 3: A faculty member of our university purchased a PC by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research and installed SPSS by the site license. The faculty member lend the computer to a collaborating researcher of another univerisity and let the collaborating researcher use SPSS.
A3. This is a license violation because it is not permitted that a non-university person use SPSS outside the university. Basically this license is intended for a person who belongs to University of Tsukuba.

Q20. Can a non-university person use the Site License of SPSS?

SPSS Japan lists the following examples as acceptable cases of SPSS usage:

• Example 1: Use in a public program
When the public program is hosted by the university, a non-university person could use SPSS.

• Example 2: Usage by out-side persons
In the case of a corporation, it is acceptable if SPSS were used on the computer terminals of the company by outsiders under the supervision of the corporate administrator (for example, use by contract employees or temporary employees).

Considering the examples above, it is not a problem that SPSS is used within the university research facilities by registered students of the university’s public program or by co-researchers.

Q21. Is SPSS available in any other languages; such as English, Korean or Chinese?

SPSS has multi-language support. The language setting is automatically configured depending on the OS on installation. However, you can change it manually after installation.

Select “Options(オプション)” from the “Edit(編集)” menu. Under the “Language(言語)” tab, select your preferred language in both “Output(出力)” and “User Interface(ユーザ・インタフェース)” and click on “OK”.

Q24. What does the “Up to 5 users can use the option” mean?

Each option uses one license per option at the time the corresponding command (menu) is opened, and only 5, 4 or 2 licenses can be used at the same time.

For example, it is possible to have 40 students run SPSS in a class room setting, however, the Missing Values analysis (Missing Values option) menu can be opened only by 2 students at one time. All the other students need to wait to use the Missing Values analysis menu until one of the 2 prior users finish using that particular SPSS option. The license is counted by options, so even when the Missing Values option is being used, other options such as the Probit module (in the Regression option) can still be opened.

Q25. Could an option be purchased by a university Laboratory?

It is not possible for you to use an optional program sold for general public use and combine it to use with the Site Licensed Base. Because our SPSS license is non-permanent (limited until March 2022), the additional purchase of options needs to be a special agreement corresponding to this non-permanent licensing.

In addition, because licenses will be available by the license server for the whole university, it is impossible that those who paid for the cost use preferentially. Additional purchase of options is not realistic.

Q26. How do we run the license server on our own?

As there are restrictions on the number of license, independent operation cannot be performed unless you purchase additional licenses.

Q29. Unable to overwrite save of spsspord.inf

See [Property] – [Security] on spssprod.inf. You are rejected because it is not writebale by the user’s name who is logging in to that PC. Put the user to [Writable].

Select [File]-[New]-[Syntax] in the menu.
Then new Syntax Editor window will open. Input the following command in the window and select [Run]-[All] in the menu.

Q32. On my Mac, SPSS appearance is wrong, for example, some setting items in the menu bar are missing.

Reset the setting items on the menu bar.

[Operating Procedure]

1. Launch Terminal by clicking [Applications]->[Utilities]->[Terminal].
2. Run the following command in the Terminal and input the Administrator password.
        sudo killall -u {CURRENT_USER(login username)} cfprefsd
3. Launch Finder, click [Go] in the menu bar while holding down [Option] button, and select [Library].
   Then refer [Preferences].
4. Change the name of “com.ibm.spss.plist” (e.g. to “old_com.ibm.spss.plist”), or move “com.ibm.spss.plist” to the Trash.
5. Clean the Trash and restart the computer.

Q33. I have started SPSS using VPN service on Mac, but the splash screen continues to be displayed and does not move to the data entry screen.

Increase the priority of VPN (L2TP) in the network environment of Mac.

Open [System Preferences] – [Network], select “Set Service Order…” menu, and set VPN (L2TP) to the top.

Q34. The “error code 77” is displayed when trying to checkout a commuter license.

It means that the all commuter licenses are now used and you cannot checkout.

From April 2017 the contract of SPSS changed and the number of licenses became 400. Therefore, checkout may be impossible since we set the commuter licenses to be offered at a fixed percent. If you cannot check out, you need to connect to the network, and please go through the VPN service or use the Remote Desktop of the Zengaku Computer System.

Q35. When I try to open the file, the “データを開く” dialog screen says “IBM SPSS StatisticsはUnicodeエンコードモードで実行中です…”. 　(Information for users of the Japanese version)

All character data, including SPSS data set files (*.sav files), Excel files (*.xlsx files), and text files (such as *.txt and *.csv files) are entered in a specific “encoding” format. Broadly speaking, data is entered in either “local locale” or “Unicode”. Local locale is the conventional encoding set for each language, such as Japanese, and takes either one byte (half-width) or two bytes (full-width) per character. Unicode is a new encoding set for all languages at once and takes either 1, 2, or 3 bytes per character.

SPSS Statistics is set to “Unicode”. If the file you are trying to open is written in “Shift-JIS”, the above message will appear because SPSS automatically converts the file from “Shift-JIS” to “Unicode” to accommodate this difference.

Select “はい” as you can continue to use the file in SPSS Statistics with the settings as suggested in the message. If you save the dataset file afterwards, it will be saved in “Unicode”. If you select “いいえ,” the file may not be opened in SPSS Statistics. If you select “キャンセル,” the file will not open in SPSS Statistics.

Please note that in Unicode, the number of digits of characters entered in the data will be counted more than in the original Shift-JIS because there are characters that take 3 bytes.

Q36. I cannot use SPSS even on the campus network.

Have you set the name of license manager?
Open spssprod.inf and check whether spss.u.tsukuba.ac.jp is written at DaemonHost=. Please write it if it does not exist.

Depending on the location in the university, SPSS may not be able to start because of its own network setting by the department. In that case, please contact with the network administrator of the department, or go through the VPN service or use the Remote Desktop of the Zengaku Computer System.

Q37. When I click “Copy to Clipboard” on the screen showing an AMOS path diagram, a message is displayed.

It may be displayed in case of Remote Desktop (of the Zengaku Computer System) with web browser (HTML 5). You can paste it even if it is displayed. It does not display when you connect using VMware Horizon Client or RDP (Remote Desktop Connection).

Q38. The menu bar is not present on macOS High Sierra (10.13).

According to IBM Support “Since macOS 10.13 is not supported, please downgrade back to macOS 10.12 or use it on other PC or supported environment”.
