Important Notes on Windows 11 Setup and Use

Modified:2026-06-17

Please refer to the following information for important notes on setting up Windows on a newly purchased Windows 11 (Home/Pro) PC and using Office, Teams, and other services after setup.

Notes on Windows Setup

Note 1

When you purchase a Windows 11 (Home/Pro) PC and turn it on for the first time, the Windows setup screen will appear. During setup, you will generally need to sign in with a Microsoft account(hereinafter called “MS account”) in order to complete the initial setup.

Note 2

In general, the university’s MS account (@u or @un) cannot be used to sign in during this setup process. You will need to sign in with a personal MS account instead.

  • If you already have a personal MS account, you can use it to sign in.
  • If you do not have one, you can create a new account.
※A personal MS account can be created using an email address such as @outlook.jp or Gmail.
(To avoid confusion, please do not use your @u email address when creating a Microsoft account.)

Notes After Setup

If you use a personal MS account, rather than the university’s MS account, to complete the initial setup during Windows setup, you may find that you are already signed in with that account when you later use Office or Teams.
In this case, you will need to sign in again with the university’s Microsoft account (@u or @un) in order to use these services with that account.
※If you want to use Microsoft 365 services such as Office and Teams with the university’s MS account rather than with a personal MS account, please refer to the instructions below.

How to Switch the Account You Are Signed In With
  • In Office apps (such as Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps)
(Not the “Microsoft 365 (Office)” app.)
If you are signed in with a personal MS account when you open Word or another Office app, please sign out first. You can sign out from the sign-in area near the upper-right corner of the Word app or other Office apps, where your name is displayed.
  • In the Teams app
If you open the Teams desktop app and an error message appears instead of the sign-in screen, try selecting “Restart the app” or “Sign out” from the error message area.
If the sign-in screen appears but you are signed in with a personal MS account, try signing in from “Sign in with another MS account.”
  • In Edge (web browser) and the Microsoft 365 (Office) app
On the screen that says, “Welcome to…”, click the account manager icon in the upper-right corner of the screen, shown as a person-shaped icon, and check which account you are currently signed in with. If you are signed in with a personal MS account, try selecting “Sign out” or “Sign in with another account” first. Alternatively, access https://login.microsoftonline.com/ and try signing out or switching accounts in the same way.
If you still cannot sign in properly, try signing in with another web browser.
(For Windows: If you are using Edge, try using Google Chrome or Firefox.)
(For Mac: If you are using Safari, try using Google Chrome or Firefox.)
