Overview of Microsoft Copilot
The following information is based on the status as of June 2025.
Microsoft Copilot Chat (formerly Bing Chat Enterprise), a generative AI service provided by Microsoft, is available to all members of the university with a personal license for Microsoft products.
This differs from “Microsoft 365 Copilot (Copilot Pro),” which functions within Microsoft 365 applications such as Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
(For information on Microsoft 365 Copilot, please refer to the “Comparison” section at the bottom of this page.)
Copilot Chat is a cloud service offered by Microsoft that combines OpenAI’s GPT-4 class generative AI with internet search capabilities via Bing.
For more details, please refer to Microsoft’s documentation:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/copilot/overview
Under the university’s EES contract, the version available is “Copilot Chat with Commercial Data Protection.”
According to Microsoft, data inputted into prompts and the outputs generated will not be stored or accumulated in Microsoft systems, and will not be used for training the AI models.

Eligible Users
Those who have a university-issued Microsoft account with the domain @u or @un.
(Note: Access will be revoked upon graduation, program completion, or leaving the university.)
How to Use
- Access https://m365.cloud.microsoft/
- Sign in using your university Microsoft account (@u or @un).
(You may be required to log in again even if you are already signed in to Microsoft 365 or other services.) - The Microsoft Copilot interface will open.
If you see protected icon in the top-right corner and hover your cursor over it and it says “Enterprise data protection applies to this chat”, you are using Copilot Chat with Commercial Data Protection under the university’s license.
(Please note that the screen layout may differ or change at Microsoft’s discretion.)
※If the above steps do not work as expected, please try starting over from the beginning — this may resolve the issue.
If you are using Windows 11 (version 23H2 or later), you can also access the service through the Windows Copilot app.
Important Notes
There is also a personal version of Copilot Chat.
If the “Enterprise data protection applies to this chat” message is not displayed, you are using the personal version of Copilot Chat, not the enterprise version with commercial data protection. Please exercise caution.
Usage Guidelines
※Please use this service in accordance with the university’s guidelines and policies on generative AI use.
Refer to: University of Tsukuba Policy on the Use of Generative AI (japanese text only)

※Academic Computing and Communications Center does not provide support for using Copilot Chat.
Comparison
There are differences between Copilot Chat (formerly Bing Chat Enterprise) and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Microsoft 365 Copilot works in conjunction with Microsoft 365 apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. To use it, a separate paid license is required.
If you wish to purchase a license, please contact the ACCC via the inquiry form.
※Students cannot purchase licenses. Please ask a faculty or staff member to contact us.
Please also note that as of mid-January 2025, Microsoft renamed the “Microsoft 365” service itself to “Microsoft 365 Copilot.” However, using the integrated Copilot features with Microsoft 365 apps still requires a separate paid license.
